Origin & History
Patchouli is native to Malaysia and the Philippines and is currently cultivated in China, India, Brazil and Indonesia. It has been widely used over the years within Asian medicine as an antiseptic, antidepressant and aphrodisiac. Long prized for its strong scent, it is said that the Indians used patchouli to perfume their fabrics and to keep away moths. A similar method was adopted during Victorian times; dried patchouli leaves were placed between the folds of shawls and to this day patchouli is still used as a popular method of perfuming and protecting linen from bed bugs. It is known to be one of the best natural fixatives and is popularly used within oriental scented perfumes, as well as within skin-care, aesthetics and dermatology.
